The project has been developed in partnership with Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Sessions have been led by professional music therapist, Matt Le Mare in 2015 and Thomas Woodward in 2016 and supported by music students from The University of Nottingham. The focus is on developing relationships with residents living with dementia through musical memories. Laura Chambers Lodge and Melbourne House are participating in the project.
The musicians pre-prepared performances of several different pieces and during the sessions, residents were encouraged to sing along and take part by playing percussion instruments. As the sessions progressed, participants provided the musical memories that informed future sessions and shared experiences.
The programme has been a success for the residents and also the students who have reported that these experiences have been incredibly stimulating and invaluable. In many instances this work has helped shape musical careers following on from graduation.
